Postdoctoral Associate – Microclimate - OPEN

Job Description

We are seeking a motivated Postdoctoral Associate to join us to conduct research in urban microclimate in the highly urbanized and industrialized city of Singapore. The candidate is expected to participate in ongoing studies targeting urban heat island and urban environment modelling, including airflow, temperature, and hydrological processes from micro- to meso-scale, to analyse the numerical results, and to perform other relevant duties when necessary (e.g., prepare datasets for modelling input and paper writing).

The position will be based at the Center for Environmental Sensing and Modeling (CENSAM), an interdisciplinary research group of the Singapore-MIT Alliance for Research and Technology (SMART), with collaboration with other CREATE entities (ETH, TUM-CREATE, and NUS).

 

​​ Requirements
  • An earned PhD degree in environmental/mechanical engineering, meteorology, physical geography or related fields is required.
  • Knowledge of urban climate and urban environment is a must.
  • Expertise of microscale (e.g., computational fluid dynamics models) and/or mesoscale models (e.g., Weather Research and Forecasting with urban canopy model) in urban thermal environment simulations is required. Experience in modelling wind, temperature and humidity in complex, realistic urban area is preferred.
  • Basic knowledge and hands-on experience of at least one scripting/computer language (e.g. C/C++, Fortran, Python, Matlab) is required; proficiency of Linux operating environment is an advantage.
  • Some knowledge of geographical information system (GIS) will be an advantage.
  • Ability to work independently as well as in a team.
  • Strong oral and written communicating skills are required.

Job Description

A Postdoctoral Associate position is immediately available for a highly motivated individual to join the Center for Environmental Sensing And Modeling (CENSAM) at the Singapore–MIT Alliance for Research and Technology (SMART), in the frame of a research program jointly led by Prof Dick K.P. Yue (MIT, Department of Mechanical Engineering) and Prof Roland Bouffanais (SUTD, EPD). The candidate should have a strong interest in interdisciplinary research and expertise in some of the following fields: computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and CFD modeling, environmental modeling and sensing. The overall goal of the project is to develop a floating supercomputing cluster with compute nodes onboard mobile buoys capable of sensing and cooperative repositioning.

The candidate will be responsible for: 

  1. The development of several technical and scientific aspects of this state-of-the-art sensing and computing platform.
  2. The coordination of SMART-CENSAM team and the SUTD team. 3. Assist to co-supervise at least one Ph.D. student at SUTD.

  • Successful candidates should have received a Ph.D. degree in mechanical engineering, ocean engineering, marine science, physics, or a related field.
  • Research expertise in CFD, environmental modeling and sensing, or complexity science will be considered a plus.

  • You will be the main Point of Contact for the research group (for SMART CREATE, professors, researchers, students, contractors and, visitors)
  • Your Office and Lab Administrator tasks will include ordering stationary and other supplies, overseeing overall cleanliness of premises, helping staff with their everyday questions/issues, maintaining workplace safety records, knowing SMART policies and guidelines, improving best practices and procurement duties, etc.
