September 8, 2009: Preis et al. received the Best Paper Award at Computing and Control in the Water Industry 2009, 'Integrating Water Systems', September 2009, The Edge, University of Sheffield.

August 5, 2009: Funding opportunity from NEA Singapore, proposals due 31 Aug 2009.

August 5, 2009: The first group of SMA PhD Fellowships have been selected. Four were selected to work with CENSAM faculty:

  • Bing ZHAO : co-advised by Professors Eric Adams and Adrian Law; Matriculation date NTU (CEE): July 27
  • Eveline EKKLESIA: co-advised by Professors Pete Shanahan and Lloyd Chua Hock Chye; Matriculation date NTU (CEE): July 27
  • Ajay Giri Prakash KOOTAPALLI: co-advised by Professors Michael Triantafyllou and Miao Jianmin; Matriculation date NTU (MAE): July 28
  • Kian Yew LIM: co-advised by Professors Ole Madsen and Cheong Hin Fatt; Scheduled to be at MIT in September 1 through December 31, 2009, then at NUS.

May 22, 2009: Singapore Education Minister Ng Eng Hen at a press conference on Tuesday 19 May 2009 announced that MIT has been confirmed as a partner for the fourth university which will open in 2011.

April 29, 2009: A seminar: From Piles To Wellbore Stability will be given by Andrew J. Whittle on May 6, 2009 (4:30 PM - 6:00 PM) at EA-02-11, Faculty of Engineering, National University of Singapore.

March 2, 2009: SMART Postdoctoral Fellowships Available - The Singapore-MIT Alliance for Research and Technology (SMART) recently announced the establishment of SMART Postdoctoral Fellowships. These awards will provide a unique opportunity for recent Ph.D. graduates to participate in the Singapore-MIT Alliance for Research and Technology (SMART) Centre in Singapore. The awards, to be given annually, are open to those with less than three years postdoctoral experience and provided they have received their doctoral degree by September 1, 2009. In addition to a competitive salary, the award will provide both a research grant and a travel allowance. The fellowship recipient would be able to conduct research of his/her own choice in Singapore within, but not necessarily tied closely to, a current project in CENSAM or one of the other SMART Interdisciplinary Research Groups (IRGs). The deadline for applications is 15 May 2009. It is anticipated that the recipients will take up their appointments at SMART by September 1, 2009 or earlier.

March 1, 2009: PhD Fellowships Available - Fellowships for PhD students at National University of Singapore (NUS) and Nanyang Technological University (NTU) are available. These fellowships provide the opportunity to be co-advised by an MIT faculty member involved in CENSAM; and to spend six months doing research at MIT. Details are provided in this announcement. Interested candidates are encouraged to contact the MIT faculty working in an area of interest. February 17, 2009: Spring School on Fluid Mechanics and Geophysics of Environmental Hazards (19 Apr - 2 May, 2009)

February 16, 2009: The second CENSAM annual workshop was held on 01/19/2009 - 01/20/2009 at Shaw Foundation and Guild House on the NUS campus. It was attended by 100 - 130 people including representatives from the Building Code Authority, Ministry of Defence, National Environment Agency and Public Utilities Board.

February 9, 2009: Driest January in 10 years, Straits Times

January 22, 2009: Kate Kerigan and four classmates in the Environmental and Water Quality Engineering track in CEE spent January in Singapore to complete bacterial sampling and source tracking. They are working with Pete Shanahan. See Kate's blog for some additional details including photos.
